On the 25th May 2018, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will replace the Data Protection Act 1998.
GDPR – what is it?
GDPR stands for: General Data Protection Regulation. Put simply, the GDPR is a new data protection regulation that’s designed to build upon the current Data Protection Act, update the regulations to be fit for the modern digital age, strengthen and unify the safety and security of all data held within an organisation.
Key Staff, regarding GDPR, within The Mulberry House School
The Mulberry House School has taken the position, as advised in the correspondence from the ISBA Oct 2017, that a school within the independent sector does not fall within the categories requiring the mandatory appointment of the legally defined role of a data protection officer, whoever, in order to ensure best practice when processing personal data, the school has taken the advice to appoint a Privacy Manager to manage staff training, awareness, policies and promote best practice within the school.
The Privacy Manager role will be performed by the school Bursar, Jay Harley.

Staff awareness of the GDPR
The Mulberry House School understands that continuous employee awareness and understanding is vital to the continued compliance of the GDPR and we have involved our employees in our preparation plans. We have implemented an employee training program, specific to the requirements of the GDPR, which will be provided to all employees prior to 25th May 2018, and forms part of our induction and annual training program.
Whilst the school has complied with the existing data protection act 1998, the new legislation contains additional requirements of the school which we are legally bound to complete to uphold yours and your child’s rights. We have made considerable progress but there is still some work to do and we would ask your patience and understanding during this process as our primary focus is still the provision of the best possible safe environment for learning. We will keep you informed, via our website and parent messaging services, at all stages of our journey.
