”It’s not that I’m so smart, it’s just that I stay with problems longer
Albert Einstein
Mathematics is essential in everything we construct, everything we calculate and almost every problem we solve in our daily lives. We want our pupils to reason and problem solve, flexibly applying methods and translating their knowledge and learning to new situations.
From the earliest years, the children develop fundamental maths skills in number as well as statistics, measurement and geometry. They are taught to question, develop their investigative thinking and apply their knowledge to real life situations. Throughout the year they participate in Number Day, cooking sessions, a variety of problem solving activities, treasure hunts, weekly challenges, young enterprise projects. All of these events build on the children’s growing understanding of maths and lay the foundations for success in Key Stage 1 and the future.
